Reflexology is an ancient form of bodywork that is enjoying increasing interest not only in in the United States but all over the world. Historical records show that healing practises, focusing on the hands and feet, were developed in India and Egypt as long ago as 3000 BCE. Four thousand years ago, a comprehensive health system which included treatment of the feet, was developed in China.  Eventually, these ancient understandings of the body spread to Japan and became integrated with other practises like acupuncture.

Practitioners such as Dr. William Fitzgerald (1872-1942), Dr. Joe Shelby Riley (1868-?) and Eunice Ingram (1889-1774) introduced this form of healing to the U.S. in the early twentieth century. Today, medical science has become increasingly interested in studying the effects of Reflexology. In 2005, Michigan State University won a prestigious National Institute of Health (NIH) grant for a five year study of the effects of Reflexology on women undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer
